Matthews Calls Out O’Beirne on Perjury Hypocrisy

Chris Matthews reamed Kate O’Beirne for her hypocrisy on the perjury issue from her staunch support of impeach of President Bill Clinton in 1998 and her cries of “injustice” when I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby was found guilty of perjury and obstruction of justice by a jury of his peers.

There is, however, a major difference between the Republican Congress pushing to remove Clinton from the highest office for lying about oral sex — lowering the bar for “high crimes and misdemeanors” — and Libby being found guilty by a jury.

    There’s another hypocrisy here: O’Beirne is lying when she says that Clinton admitted to committing perjury. He admitted to lying under oath, which is not the same thing.

    Perjury is telling a lie in an attempt to change the outcome of a trial or investigation. Prosecutors must prove that the defendant could reasonably believe that his lie would have an impact. Clinton’s lying about consensual sex would obviously have no bearing on a trial that was about sexual harassment.

    Also, what’s with the argument that convicted criminals shouldn’t go to jail unless they confess?
