Nonito Donaire Engaged; Set to Defend Title in Dubai
It seems that everyone I know is getting married these days.
Congratulations to Bay Area local fighter and IBO/IBF Flyweight Champion, Nonito Donaire (19-1), on the news of his engagement. The story broke from Donaire’s native Philippines:
Like in the movies, IBF flyweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr. yesterday popped the question to girlfriend Rachel Marcial and sang a love song that swept the Fil-Am taekwondo jin off her feet during the taping of a talk show at the Makisig studios in Quezon City.
Donaire’s proposal took Makisig owner Hermie Esguerra, Makisig executive vice president Manny Viray, guest Noli Eala and the studio audience by surprise. The fighter walked up to Marcial, asked her to marry him then sang Jason Mraz’ “I’m Yours.†Marcial said “of course†as they hugged and kissed before the TV cameras.
Donaire earned “Knockout of the Year” and “Upset of the Year” honors from Ring Magazine for his crushing July knockout of then-champion Vic Darchinyan in Connecticut. HBO Sports also bestowed similar accolades on “The Filipino Flash” last December. He is set to defend the IBF Flyweight title against Hussein Hussein in Dubai on April 4. Donaire’s older brother, Glenn (16-3), is in the co-main event on Let’s Get It On Promotions’ February 22 card.
