NBA All-Star Weekend in the Big Easy
It is NBA All-Star Weekend in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Last night saw the league Sophomores defeat the Rookies. Earlier tonight, Team San Antonio won the Shooting Stars Challenge. Deron Williams of the Utah Jazz set a new time record in the Skills Challenge. Toronto Raptors’ Jason Kapono tied the 1986 record in the final round of the 3-Point Shootout.
The Slam Dunk Contest saw a few new innovations: Minnesota Timberwolves’ Gerald Green, the returning Slam Dunk champion, blew out a candle. But the Orlando Magic big man, Dwight Howard, stole the show. First, with a bounce off the back of the backboard into a windmill, then he donned a Superman cape with the t-shirt and basically threw the ball through the iron. He finished it off by attaching a small indoor hoop to the backboard to hold the ball while he does a windmill.
“Magic” Johnson said it best, that people were yawning at the Slam Dunk Contest the last few years and it was thought to be discontinued but, tonight, it was back, and Dwight Howard took it to a new level.
