The History Channel updates visitors on historic events throughout world history with “This Day in History.” There were a number of notables for February 26:

1917: President Woodrow Wilson learned of the infamous Zimmerman Telegram — the dispatch German authorities to Mexican officials suggesting an alliance should the United States be brought into the war against Germany.

1984: The last U.S. forces leave Beirut following orders from President Ronald Reagan after the devastating bombing attack on the Marine barracks that left 241 American forces dead the previous October.

1993: The first attack on the World Trade Center killed six people and wounded roughly 1,000 more after a terrorist car bomb exploded in the parking garage. Plot mastermind, Ramzi Ahmed Yousef, was apprehended in Pakistan roughly three years later.
