Sen. Robert F. Kennedy on Dr. King’s Assassination
Senator Robert F. Kennedy, running for the Democratic nomination, delivered a statement in Indianapolis, Indiana upon hearing the news that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was shot and killed in Memphis, Tennessee. Senator Kennedy, noting that his brother, President John F. Kennedy, was also killed by a white man, presented two options for Americans to take: the path of racial healing and social justice, or the path of continued, bitter conflict.
We can move in that direction as a country, in greater polarization — black people amongst blacks, and white amongst whites, filled with hatred toward one another. Or we can make an effort, as Martin Luther King did, to understand, and to comprehend, and replace that violence, that stain of bloodshed that has spread across our land, with an effort to understand, compassion, and love.
Just over two months later, Senator Kennedy was killed by an assassin’s bullet in Los Angeles.
