5.2 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Midwest

Posted by Matt Ortega | April 18, 2008

Midwesterners were greeted early this morning with a rare 5.2 magnitude earthquake centered in southern Illinois — one of the strongest ever in the state of Illinois. It was felt in Chicago on the other side of the state, Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan, and as far as Ontario, Canada.

Ironically, today marks the 102nd anniversary of the “great1906 San Francisco earthquake that destroyed most of the city and killed hundreds. That earthquake registered 8.0 in magnitude. Recently, the U.S. Geological Survey, in partnership with other groups, released a report on the high likelihood of “the big one” striking both northern and southern California by 2037.
