Washington, DC 20534RE: Public Comment in Response to FCI Dublin Environmental Assessment – Proposed Action to Permanently Deactivate and Close the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, Camp Parks, California
Dear Facilities Management,
This public comment is in relation to the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) “Environmental Assessment (EA) – Proposed Action to Permanently Deactivate and Close the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Dublin, Camp Parks, California.”
It is clear from your own environmental assessment that this 50-year old facility is unsafe for human habitation. To bring it in line with proper standards, it would cost taxpayers tens of millions—at a time when our tax dollars are wasted on an illegal war, payouts to insurrectionist criminals, and corrupt federal contracts—with persistent upkeep and risks to safety and environmental hazards.
The presence of a detention facility will also draw more ICE activity to the region—a community with a 40 percent foreign-born population in this region. Such activity will only necessitate a response from the community like we see outside Delaney Hall in New Jersey right now. This community will not tolerate the systematic abuse and degradation of our neighbors.
The issue at hand now is whether or not FCI Dublin will one day become a museum to our great national shame. The parking lot for concentration camp guards arriving in their family cars replaced with school buses. Exhibits on inhumane conditions, vectors of disease due to neglect, and sexual abuse committed by staff against detainees including children.
Will this community be placed alongside other flashpoints in this struggle? Delaney Hall. Dilley. Dublin?
You can prevent this future for us. Do not bring this shame upon our community.
Sincerely,
Matt Ortega
