Statement on Supreme Court ruling to gut the Voting Rights Act
Matt Ortega, Democratic candidate for California’s 14th Congressional District in the June 2 primary, issued the following statement in response to today’s Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais.
With today’s ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, the Supreme Court dishonors the bloody sacrifices of generations of civil rights activists.
The Roberts Court seeks to achieve what the Confederacy and the Klan could not while wearing robes that are black rather than white.
This Court’s documented corruption and rabid partisanship deserves the ignominy it earned. To restore public faith in the Court’s ability to render a free and fair judgment, we must break the grip of corporate partisan power over it.
In Congress, I will fight for my plan to expand the Supreme Court to 13 rotational seats to dilute the power of any single justice and place them under an enforceable code of conduct.
The Supreme Court of the United States must serve, not subjugate, the people.
