Matt Ortega, Democratic candidate for California’s 14th Congressional District, issued the following statement on the resignation of Eric Swalwell from Congress.

Congressman Swalwell betrayed the district and all those closest to him with his actions. The first step towards healing begins with this resignation.

The bravery of those who came forward to tell their story must not be forgotten. It takes courage to speak out against someone powerful, especially when that truth is deeply personal. We live in a time where the courage to speak truth to power is rare and the powerful skate by with impunity.

Not today.

I am also thinking of those in my life who have endured the same pain but exhibited the same courage. They are among the strongest people I know. Let us consider the family members affected by these revelations. Their healing begins with the understanding that they bear none of the shame.

Our leaders must understand they are temporary. It is the public trust in the office that must endure.

Now California’s 14th Congressional District can move forward and look to the future. The office can focus on the pressing needs of the people—housing, health care, and so much more. The person who succeeds Swalwell must put in the work, lead with purpose, and restore the public’s faith.
